
Amherst got its named after the British commandant Lord Jeffrey Amherst. Amherst school district is a famous educational area comprising among others the University of Massachusetts and Amherst College. The University of Massachusetts is the largest educational institution in Amherst school district. Amherst school district also incorporates Hampshire College, which is situated in the south area and has been performing its activity since 1970. The educational community of Amherst school district is as well proud of the prominent institutions for women, such as Smith and Mount Holyoke Colleges, located in the close proximity to the town of Amherst.
